Definition
What is international SEO?
International SEO is the work of ranking one website in several countries or languages: choosing how the versions are organized (subfolders, subdomains or country domains), telling Google which version belongs to each language and country with hreflang, and researching and writing each market's content with the words people actually search for there.
Summary
Executive Summary
What you need to know before opening a new market.
The most expensive mistake in international SEO is treating it as translation. Pages get translated, keywords get translated, and everything goes live. Abroad, people search with different words, Google does not know which version to show to whom, and versions in the same language (UK and US, Germany and Austria) end up competing with each other. The result is traffic that never arrives, or arrives at the wrong version.
We do it the way we do it on our own site: kiwop.com is published in seven languages and each one has its own URLs, chosen by measured demand in that market. Our website maintenance page is /website-maintenance in English, /website-wartung in German and /manutencao-de-sites in Portuguese, because that is what people search for there. The same approach runs Loviux across 24 countries and the multilingual SEO of Tamarit Beach Resort.
Pricing is the same as our SEO service: audit and roadmap, €4,000-6,000; then €3,000-8,000/month, with no lock-in. What moves the figure within that range is the number of markets and languages and how much content each one needs.
- €4,000-6,000 Audit and roadmap
- €3,000-8,000 Per month, by markets
- 30 days Notice, no lock-in
What's included
What International SEO Includes
The technical work and the market work, in every language and country you open.
- URL structure: subfolders, subdomains or country domains, decided by your business, not by habit
- Complete hreflang: every version links to all the others and to itself, with x-default and no return errors
- Keywords researched in each market, with their volume and intent in that country, not translated
- Localized slugs: each language's URL uses the words people search for there
- Localized content: prices, currencies, examples, case studies and legal references for the country, not just the language
- Internal linking by language: each version links to its sibling pages in its own language, never to the default version
- Search Console by country and language: each market's performance separated so you can decide with data
- AI assistant visibility by language: what ChatGPT answers to the same question in each language
- Structured data per version: the right language, currency and address in each market's schema
Why
Hreflang: The Detail That Decides Which Version Each Country Sees
The technical piece that breaks most often, and the one nobody notices until traffic is missing.
Hreflang tells Google which URL belongs to each language and, where needed, each country. It only works if every version links to all the others and to itself: if the German version points to the French one but the French one does not link back, Google ignores the pair. It has to match each page's canonical (every version is canonical to itself, never to the default version) and the URLs in the sitemap. The usual faults we find: wrong country codes (en-UK instead of en-GB), versions pointing to redirected URLs, canonicals crossing to the main version, and hreflang only on the homepage. We check it in the templates and in a full crawl, not page by page.
- Both ways Return links
- Self Canonical
- Set x-default
Key points
The Decisions We Make With You
Before a single line is translated. Changing them later costs redirects and traffic.
- 01
Subfolders, Subdomains or Country Domains
Subfolders (example.com/de/) inherit the domain's authority and are the easiest to maintain: it is what kiwop.com uses. A country domain (example.de) is the clearest country signal and fits when each market has its own operation, currency or brand, as with Loviux. Subdomains make sense when each version runs on a different platform. We decide by your business, not by habit.
- 02
Language, or Language and Country
If you sell the same way in the UK and the US, one English version may be enough. If prices, shipping or vocabulary change, you need country versions (en-GB, en-US) whose content really differs. Two identical versions with different hreflang add nothing.
- 03
Each Market's Keywords and Slugs
We research what people search for in each country with that country's tools and settings. Sometimes it is the literal translation and sometimes it is not: our website maintenance page is «Website-Wartung» in German and «manutenção de sites» in Portuguese, because that is how people search there. Each language's URL uses those words, without accents or special characters.
- 04
Which Pages Open Each Market
You do not need to translate the whole site on day one. We start with the pages that have measured demand in that country and the ones that convert, and leave out what nobody searches for there. Ten good pages in German beat a hundred unreviewed translations.
- 05
How Each User Reaches Their Version
No automatic redirects by IP or browser language: Google crawls mostly from the United States and might never see the other versions, and a traveling user cannot choose. Hreflang, a visible language selector and, if you want, a banner that suggests the user's country version.
- 06
How Each Country Is Measured
Search Console filtered by country and folder, conversion goals per market in your analytics, and AI assistant visibility tested with questions in each language. So you know which market deserves more investment and which one does not yet.
How we work
How We Work
From audit to the first market ranking. Technical fixes show in 2-4 weeks; content starts ranking at 3-6 months.
- 01
International Audit
We crawl every version: URL structure, hreflang, canonicals, sitemaps, duplicate content across languages, internal links that cross languages, and performance by country in Search Console. If you have no versions abroad yet, we analyze demand in the markets you are interested in.
- 02
Strategy by Market
Keyword research in each country, local competitors and the structure decision. The output is a prioritized roadmap: which market first, which pages to open and what to fix beforehand.
- 03
Technical Foundation
Hreflang, canonicals, sitemaps per language, localized slugs, language selector and structured data per version. We implement it ourselves or specify it for your development team.
- 04
Localized Content
Pages written or adapted per market with the local search terms, and internal linking within each language. With your team, with native translators or with our content marketing team.
- 05
Measurement and Tuning by Country
Monthly report per market with rankings, traffic, conversions and presence in AI assistants. What works in one country is taken to the next.
Who it is for
Is It Right for You?
International SEO pays off when you already sell, or can sell, outside your home country.
Who it's for
- Companies that already export or sell online abroad but do not show up in those countries' search results.
- Translated websites that get no traffic in those languages, or get it on the wrong version.
- Online stores opening new markets with their own currency, taxes or shipping.
- Tourism, industrial or software companies with customers in several languages.
- Teams about to migrate or redesign a multilingual site who do not want to lose what already ranks.
Who it's not for
- Businesses that can only serve customers in their own country: local SEO comes first.
- Anyone looking to machine-translate the site and publish it unreviewed.
- Markets with no sales capacity behind them: traffic from a country where you cannot sell or ship is useless.

The proof
Multilingual Websites We Rank
The first one is ours: kiwop.com is in seven languages (Spanish, English, Catalan, German, French, Dutch and Portuguese), with slugs localized according to demand in each market and hreflang on every page. When the English block and the AI pages sat unindexed for months, we ran a census of the 678 URLs with Google's URL Inspection API, found the cause, and the ten priority URLs were indexed the same day. For Loviux we built 24 countries from a single backend, each with its own domain, currency and language, full hreflang, 4,500 programmatic landing pages and product pages in 18 languages; from January to September 2026 its completed orders grew 7×, and in September ChatGPT brought 44% of orders, with no way to tell which change weighed most. And at Tamarit Beach Resort, multilingual SEO with hreflang for Spanish, English, French and German came with +60% organic traffic.
- 7 Languages on kiwop.com
- 24 Loviux countries from a single backend
- +60% Organic traffic at Tamarit
- 5.0 Clutch rating
For the CTO
CTO Summary
What we need from the platform.
Each version is served on its own URL, rendered on the server (SSR or SSG): no switching language with JavaScript on the same URL, because Google only indexes one. Hreflang in the <head> or in the sitemap, generated from a single map of URL equivalents, not hand-written page by page. A self-referencing canonical on each version and sitemaps per language.
Localized slugs in ASCII, without diacritics, with a 301 redirect if they change. Internal links resolved to the page language's slug. No automatic redirects by IP or Accept-Language. Structured data with each market's inLanguage, currency and address. Performance measured by country: a CDN close to each market if the server is far away.

Risks and how we cover them
The Risks We Avoid
What we see when a multilingual site that does not rank abroad lands on our desk.
- 01
Versions in the same language competing with each other
MitigationHreflang by language and country and content that really differs between versions. If two versions do not differ, we merge them.
- 02
Translated keywords nobody searches for
MitigationKeyword research in each market before writing, and slugs with the local search terms.
- 03
Google shows the default version in other countries
MitigationBidirectional hreflang, a self canonical on each version and internal links that do not cross languages.
- 04
Losing traffic when adding languages or restructuring URLs
MitigationA URL-by-URL 301 redirect map, checked after launch, and daily Search Console monitoring for the first weeks.

FAQ
International SEO FAQs
What we are asked most before opening a market.
What is international SEO?
It is ranking one website in several countries or languages. It covers deciding the URL structure, implementing hreflang so Google shows each user their version, researching each market's keywords and localizing the content. It is not translating the site: it is making each version answer what people search for in its country.
What is better for SEO: subfolders, subdomains or a domain per country?
It depends on the business. Subfolders (example.com/fr/) keep authority on one domain and are the easiest to maintain. A country domain (example.fr) is the clearest country signal and fits when each market has its own operation, currency or brand. Subdomains fit when each version runs on a different platform. For most companies starting abroad, subfolders.
What is hreflang and how do you implement it?
It is an annotation that tells Google which URL belongs to each language or country. It goes in each page's <head>, in HTTP headers or in the sitemap. Every version must link to all the others and to itself, with correct codes (en, en-GB, en-US) and an x-default version for everyone else. If the return link is missing, Google ignores the pair.
Is translating my website enough to rank in another country?
No. People search with different words in each country, sometimes very different from the literal translation. You need keyword research in each market, adapted prices, examples and references, and a solid technical setup. A translated site without that usually gets very little traffic from abroad.
Should URLs be translated?
Yes, if you can. A URL with the words people search for in that language helps Google and the user, and AI assistants read it as one more clue about the topic. On kiwop.com each language has its own slugs, chosen by demand in that market. If you change URLs that already rank, use a 301 redirect from old to new.
Can I automatically redirect each user to their language?
Better not. Google crawls mostly from the United States and without a language header, so an automatic redirect can stop it from seeing the other versions. We recommend hreflang, a visible language selector and, at most, a banner suggesting the user's country version without forcing it.
Is duplicate content between countries in the same language penalized?
There is no penalty, but Google picks one version and hides the others if they are identical. With hreflang by country (en-GB, en-US, en-AU) and real differences (prices, currency, shipping, vocabulary), each one can rank in its own country. If there are no differences, a single English version is usually better.
How much does international SEO cost?
The same as our SEO service: audit and roadmap, €4,000-6,000; then €3,000-8,000/month, with no lock-in and 30 days notice. Excluding VAT. What moves it within the range is the number of markets and languages and the content each one needs.
How long does it take to see results?
Technical fixes (hreflang, canonicals, indexing) show in 2-4 weeks. New content in each market starts ranking at 3-6 months, depending on competition in that country and the authority your domain already has.
How do you measure SEO for each country?
In Search Console, filtering performance by country and by language folder (or with one property per version if you use subdomains or domains). In analytics, with conversions split by market. You get a monthly report per country to decide where to invest more.
What about visibility in ChatGPT and other AI assistants in other languages?
We measure it with questions in each language, because the answer and the sources an assistant cites change from one language to another. The foundation is the same as for Google: crawlable pages, clear content and structured data per version. If you want to go deeper, we have a dedicated GEO service.
