What Is an SEO Audit?

An SEO audit is a review of a website to find what stops it from ranking in Google: technical issues that block crawling and indexing, content that competes with itself or does not match what people search for, and a lack of authority. The useful outcome is not a list of errors but a plan ordered by impact and effort.

In 2026 a complete audit also covers visibility in AI search (GEO): whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews cite your brand when someone asks about what you sell. It is not the same as an AI audit, which looks at where to apply artificial intelligence in your business.

Summary

Executive Summary

What you are buying when you order an SEO audit, and what you are not.

Any tool will produce three hundred warnings about a website in ten minutes. Most of them change nothing, and some of the ones that matter do not show up at all. An audit exists to separate what is costing you traffic from what is noise, find the cause and tell you in which order to fix it.

We learned this on our own website. In 2026 our block of AI pages spent March to July crawled but not indexed. The easy diagnosis was to blame the content; the real cause was a third-party domain serving a full copy of kiwop.com. We inspected all 678 URLs in the sitemap, cut off the mirror, and the 10 URLs we submitted to Google were indexed the same day. That is the difference between auditing and running a tool.

You get a prioritized report and a handover session with whoever will carry it out. Your team can implement it, or ours can as part of our SEO service. Technical fixes usually show results in 2-4 weeks; content takes longer.

What's included

What the SEO Audit Covers

Four areas: technical, content, authority and AI visibility.

  • Crawling: robots.txt, sitemaps, internal linking, page depth and what Google sees when the site relies on JavaScript
  • Indexing: which pages Search Console excludes and why, from «Crawled - currently not indexed» to duplicates and alternate pages with a canonical
  • Canonicals and duplicates: conflicting canonicals, parameters, www and non-www versions, and third-party domains copying your site
  • Hreflang and languages: return links, language codes and cross-canonicals between versions
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP and CLS from real-user data, and which template breaks them
  • Structured data: valid, connected schema that matches what is on the page, with no repeated blocks
  • Keyword cannibalization: several URLs competing for the same search, and which one should stay
  • Thin content and search intent: pages that do not answer the query, and whether to improve, merge or remove them
  • Authority and backlinks: link profile, mentions and links lost to broken redirects
  • GEO: whether AI assistants cite your brand for the buying questions in your sector, and who they cite instead
  • AI crawlers: whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot can get in, or your robots.txt or CDN shuts them out
  • Measurement: Search Console, analytics and lead source, so you know what organic search brings you

Why

A Prioritized Report, Not a List of Three Hundred Warnings

Every finding comes with its evidence, impact, effort and owner.

Each finding in the report includes the evidence (affected URLs, the Search Console data or a screenshot), the expected impact, the effort, who does it (development, content or marketing) and how to check it is fixed. We sort them into three groups: quick fixes that move traffic, projects worth doing and what can wait. We also say what changes nothing, so nobody wastes time on it. If your site is multilingual, the language section follows the same method as our international SEO work; if it is a store with thousands of filter and variant URLs, the method of our ecommerce SEO service.

Who it is for

Is It Right for You?

An audit pays off when organic search matters to your business and you do not know what is holding it back.

Who it's for

  • Websites that have lost organic traffic and do not know why.
  • Companies about to migrate or redesign their website that do not want to lose what already ranks.
  • Websites in several languages or countries with mixed signals between versions.
  • Online stores with thousands of category, filter and variant URLs.
  • Teams with in-house SEO who want a structured second opinion from outside.
  • Brands that want to know whether AI assistants cite them, and why not.

Who it's not for

  • Newly launched websites with a handful of pages: a basic checklist is enough.
  • Anyone looking for a tool-generated report: you can get that for free.
  • Anyone with no one to implement the changes: a report nobody acts on changes nothing (we can do it for you).

The proof

Audits We Have Done

On our own website we inspected all 678 sitemap URLs with the URL Inspection API, found the mirror that was keeping us out of the index and cut it off: the 10 URLs we submitted to Google were indexed the same day, with zero canonical mismatches, robots blocks or real 404s across the 678. On the Silicium store we fixed the code that repeated structured data and hreflang across its roughly 460 pages and duplicated the canonical tag, and 301-redirected the 1,064 addresses on the old domain, checking each one live; the content pages are prepared by their SEO team, and we integrate them in all five languages. On the new ToolsGroup website, the 2,057 URLs from the old WordPress site resolve in a single hop.

  • 678 URLs inspected in our census
  • 10/10 URLs submitted and indexed the same day
  • 1,064 Addresses redirected and checked (Silicium)
  • 5.0 Clutch rating

For the CTO

Summary for the CTO

How we look under the hood.

We do not work from a sample: we inspect the sitemap URLs with the Search Console URL Inspection API and cross-check each status against our own crawl, with JavaScript rendering where the site needs it. We read Core Web Vitals from field data per template, not from a single lab run, because a one-off PageSpeed score varies from run to run.

We review what tools miss: which domains serve your content besides yours, canonicals that contradict hreflang, schema repeated by the template and redirect chains. For GEO we check whether AI crawlers reach the site (robots.txt and CDN rules) and whether the content is written to be cited: direct answers, sourced data and clear entities.

Risks and how we cover them

The Mistakes We Avoid

What we see in audits that achieved nothing.

  1. 01

Fixing three hundred warnings that do not move traffic

    Mitigation

Every finding has an impact and an effort. What does not matter is called out and left alone.

  2. 02

Blaming content for what is a technical problem

    Mitigation

We find the cause before recommending anything. On our own website, what looked like a content penalty was a third-party domain copying us.

  3. 03

Losing rankings in a migration or redesign

    Mitigation

URL inventory, redirect map and live checks after the change, as with Silicium and ToolsGroup.

  4. 04

A report that ends up in a drawer

    Mitigation

An owner for every task, a handover session and, if you want, implementation by our team.

FAQ

SEO Audit FAQs

What people ask us most before ordering one.

What does an SEO audit include?

With us, four areas: technical (crawling, indexing, canonicals, hreflang, speed and structured data), content (cannibalization, thin content and search intent), authority (backlinks and mentions) and GEO (whether AI assistants cite your brand). You get a report prioritized by impact and effort and a handover session.

How much does an SEO audit cost?

The audit with its roadmap costs €4,000-6,000, as a one-off payment. The price depends on the size of the site, the languages and markets, and whether server logs need analyzing; we fix it before we start.

How long does an SEO audit take?

It takes up weeks 1 and 2 of the engagement. Very large sites or sites in many languages may need longer, and we tell you before we start. Technical fixes that come out of it usually show results 2-4 weeks after they are applied.

How is it different from an SEO tool report?

A tool lists warnings; it does not know which ones cost you traffic or why they happen. The audit finds the cause, cross-checks Search Console data with the crawl and tells you what to fix first, who does it and how to check it is fixed.

Does it cover visibility in ChatGPT and other AI assistants?

Yes. We send the buying questions in your sector to search-enabled assistants, note whether they cite you, who they cite instead and which sources they use, and check that their crawlers can get into your site. For ongoing tracking we have our GEO service.

Is an SEO audit the same as an AI audit?

No. The SEO audit looks at your website and its visibility in Google and AI assistants. The AI audit looks at where to apply artificial intelligence in your business, what it costs and in what order.

Why does Google crawl my pages but not index them?

«Crawled - currently not indexed» usually means Google does not see enough value in the page or sees a duplicate ahead of it. On our own website the cause was a third-party domain serving a full copy of the site; once we cut it off, the pages were indexed the same day. It is one of the first things we check.

Who implements the changes afterwards?

Whoever you choose. The report is written so your team can carry it out, with an owner for each task. If you would rather we did it, we do it as part of our SEO service or as a quoted project.

What access do you need?

Read access to Search Console and analytics. Depending on what we find, also to the CMS or server logs. Never send us passwords by email: we ask for a dedicated user for our team.

How often should you do an SEO audit?

Before every migration or redesign, when traffic drops for no clear reason and, if nothing changes, once a year as a check-up. In between, Search Console and good monitoring flag what is urgent.

Do you audit websites in other languages and countries?

Yes. We work in English, Spanish, Catalan, French, German, Dutch and Portuguese, and review hreflang and market structure with the method of our international SEO service.
