How much does an AI chatbot cost?

In Spain, an off-the-shelf AI chatbot is advertised at €10 to €219 a month (median €69.50) or €400 to €1,500 one-off (median €1,200); a custom chatbot built on a company's own data and systems costs €8,000 to €30,000, and one that has to answer from large volumes of internal documents (enterprise RAG) starts at €45,000.

The off-the-shelf figures come from the Kiwop Labs observatory of published prices: 9 prices from 5 providers, with the literal text and URL of each, captured on 12 September 2026. It is a small sample, and most are small providers selling a packaged product, not the whole market: read them as what gets advertised, not as an industry average. The €8,000-30,000 is the indicative range Kiwop publishes for a customer service chatbot, and the RAG figure comes from our published tiers.   • Integrates with your systems: CRM, ERP, orders, website, WhatsApp or voice.
  • Answer quality is evaluated before going live and afterwards.
  • You decide where data is processed: servers in Europe or models on your own infrastructure.

What Pushes the Price of an AI Chatbot Up

Two chatbots that look the same can cost €8,000 or €30,000. It almost always comes down to one of these six things.

    Data sources

    A FAQ page loads in an afternoon. PDF manuals, product sheets or a ticket history have to be cleaned, split into pieces and kept up to date. In our projects, preparing scattered data can eat 30 to 50% of the budget. With lots of documents, you are already in enterprise RAG territory.

  2. 02

    Integrations

    A chatbot that only answers questions doesn't need to connect to anything. One that looks up an order, opens a ticket in the CRM or books an appointment needs a connection to each system and control over who can see what. Each integration adds days of engineering; a legacy ERP with no API, weeks.

    Languages

    Every language needs content, testing and a review of answer quality. It does not double the price, but a chatbot in 5 languages does not cost the same as one in a single language.

    Conversation volume

    The model charges per token. In Anthropic's official example, a ~3,700-token support conversation on Claude Haiku 4.5 ($1 per million input tokens, $5 per million output) comes to ~$0.004; on Claude Sonnet 5, which costs twice as much per token, twice that. If the chatbot adds document snippets to every answer, tokens go up. That is only what the model charges: adding servers, search and monitoring, the total cost per query is usually around €0.02. In our projects the model rarely exceeds 5% of the total cost.

    Security and privacy

    With personal or customer data, GDPR dictates where it is processed. Pinning the region has a cost: Anthropic states that its regional endpoints on Bedrock and Google Cloud carry a 10% premium over global ones. And if the data cannot leave your premises, you need a model on your own infrastructure, with a different budget.

    Maintenance and quality evaluation

    A chatbot is not delivered and forgotten: products, prices and policies change, and answers have to be measured. As a reference, set aside 15 to 25% a year of the project cost to run and improve it, model included.

How much does an AI chatbot cost for a small business?

It depends on what it has to do. If it only answers FAQs on your website, published off-the-shelf plans in Spain range from €10 to €219 a month (median €69.50) or €400 to €1,500 one-off. If it has to use your data and connect to your systems, a custom chatbot costs €8,000-30,000 in our experience.

Why do some chatbots cost €10 a month and others €30,000?

Because they are different products. Off-the-shelf is shared software you configure with your FAQs, with a conversation cap (one provider offers up to 500 a month for €10) and few or no integrations. A custom chatbot is built on your data and systems, evaluated before it goes live and tuned for months. You are paying for engineering, not a licence.

How much does each conversation cost in AI model usage?

Cents or less. According to Anthropic's official pricing page (checked 25 Sep 2026), a support conversation of about 3,700 tokens on Claude Haiku 4.5 costs around $0.004: roughly $37 per 10,000 conversations. That is only what the model charges for a short conversation; with servers, search and monitoring, the total cost per query is usually around €0.02. More capable models or lots of document context push it up, but it is rarely the line item that decides the budget.

Is there a monthly fee on top of the build?

Almost always. Among the observatory providers, one states that its one-off price covers the build and that AI and server usage goes into a separate monthly subscription; another advertises €20-200/month of model usage on top of the implementation. For a custom project, set aside 15 to 25% a year of the cost for operation and improvement.

How much does a chatbot that answers from my company's documents cost?

If the knowledge base is bounded (FAQs, policies, a catalogue), it falls within the custom chatbot range, €8,000-30,000. If it has to search thousands of documents across several sources, cite the source and respect permissions, it is enterprise RAG: the basic tier, with one source, runs €45,000 to €80,000.

How much does an AI chatbot for WhatsApp cost?

In off-the-shelf plans, WhatsApp usually sits in the higher tier: one provider includes it from its €119/month plan and another only offers it in its Enterprise plan. In a custom project it is one more integration within the €8,000-30,000, alongside the website, CRM or voice.

How long does it take to launch an AI chatbot?

Off-the-shelf, days to a few weeks: observatory providers advertise 48 hours, 7-10 days or 2-4 weeks. A custom chatbot with Kiwop takes 6-10 weeks, the same as a basic RAG on one source. The difference is preparing the data, integrating systems and evaluating the answers before opening it to the public.

How reliable are these market prices?

Real but partial: 9 prices from 5 providers, published on their own websites and captured on 12 Sep 2026. Prices move: when we checked on 25 Sep, one of them already advertised "Desde 1.900 €" (from €1,900) instead of "Desde 1.500 €". Agencies that do not publish prices are not included, and they tend to be the ones doing larger projects. Use them as the market floor, not as an average.
